Hello, my name is Dan and I sing in an Indie Rock band from Seattle Washington.

I'm pretty new to the singing game, and this is my first time ever singing professionally. We've been together around 8 months, so 8 months of singing altogether, with shows almost every week.

My problem, is that quite often after shows, or practice, or just singing, I get hoarse. It doesn't affect my talking voice, and it isn't noticeable to other people, but I can't hit the notes that I normally can, and my voice breaks when I try.

Now keep in mind, the music we play isn't very vocally intensive. I do sing at a higher register and occasionally hit a few high notes, but never anything too difficult to achieve.

So why do I get hoarse? I realize the easy answer is that i'm doing something wrong vocally and to get a vocal coach, which is a great idea but also an expensive one.

So until I come across some money, any tips?

10:10 am - Some music, maybe?

Hi fellow singers!!

I'm new, of course, so I'm introducing myself here. My name is Carol Belle, and I've been singing for most of my life. I've gone through different vocal coaches, training, and instruction. In high school, I was almost exclusively in choir with some solos... My main training began in College as I focused on performing arts and musical theatre.

I have a very high pitched voice, naturally, but can manipulate it to be multi-sectional (Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, and Alto . . . sometimes Contralto)

Please consider listening to some of my music. If you comment, I'll be happy to return the favor and listen to yours as well! I like listening to other people too. I believe it's right to be fair about our gifts, and I believe in being humble regardless of the gift one has. I know I'm not the best, but I know I'm not bad either.

It would be lovely to speak with some of you, and maybe even sing together! Wouldn't that be fun? :-)

  • The Rainbow Connection
Written by Jim Henson, and originally performed by the most popular Muppet Kermit the Frog. And now me. Yay.
  • Journey to the Past
From the film produced by 20th Century Fox, Anastasia.
  • Part Of That World
From Disney's The Little Mermaid (was it really 1988 when it came out!? Holy crap!)

2:04 pm - Suggestions for audition pieces?
gemanrioaks Hello everyone. I believe this is the second time I'm posting to this community, but I'll introduce myself and my current situation anyway. =)

I'm fourteen, and currently auditioning for a place in an arts school in my country. I have about, exactly, one month to prepare for it. I have no vocal teacher to coach me on the choice of pieces, and all I have are a few guidelines from the arts school: 1) Prepare two pieces within 10 minutes. 2) Present pieces of contrasting nature which display my capabilities and musical quality.

I have no idea how I'm going to choose my pieces. This is my very first major audition for anything at all and I can't help but feel a surge of trepidation because I'm so clueless about the choice of pieces.

I really hope you guys can suggest some pieces that will "display capabilities" and "musical quality", with contrasting nature. I have a few song choices in mind, but you can suggest other songs, this list is merely a very amateurish sort of suggestion.

I'm thinking of doing:

1) Not While I'm Around from Sweeney Todd
2) Think Of Me from Phantom of the Opera
3) Where Is Love from Oliver
4) Sound of Music from Sound of Music
5) The Scientist by Coldplay (They don't encourage pop songs, this was put into the list on a whim)

The School also suggests choosing a song that isn't too high or too low for me. I'm a soprano one, and can hit high G and above, but my safe range is around high E. You never know what will happen when in stage fright. =/

Also, they prefer it to be acapella, to hear the raw tone. I'm very frightened I'll go sharp or flat or something. =/

I really really hope you guys can help me. If you want to hear the tone of my voice, you can check out my Youtube channel, here: www.youtube.com/user/gemanrioaks. I've posted up some videos of me singing random songs.

Thank you so much in advance. Regards!

6:13 pm - Singing, Of course !!!

HHHiii, everyone !! Well, I'm Elodie , I like to sing and bla, bla, bla. I'm sure you've heard it all before so we're going to skip that part. Anyway, I entered a contest today  ( Youtube Idol '09 ) and it would be nice if you watched my video, comment it and rate it. Why ? Because the more views I have, the highest the ratings are and the more chances I've got to win ! So please, if you liked what I did in that video, rate high, comment and tell all your friends to do so ( if they have a Utube account and if they liked my video ) . This is certainly not an obligation :D but it would be kinda cool to be at least one of the finalists . So here's the link : www.youtube.com/watch  and i hope you'll enjoy it !!

12:04 am - Karaoke-Daisuki

Hello everyone!

Very sorry if posting this is not allowed or if it offends someone. Please feel free to delete this without prior notice if nescessary.

We are a new group, Karaoke-Daisuki, and as our name indicates; we love karaoke! But, why is there no proper, working and simple way to sing japanese karaoke outside of Japan? We want to sing to our favourite songs in japanese! And so our group was formed!

We are trying to make Karaoke in PVs (musicvideos) or other clips (anime openings, etc), and make them into real karaoke by having the karaoke-lyrics over almost the whole screen so it can easily be viewed on TVs, and using the instrumental karaoke tracks when available. The text is clearly shown on the screen before you have to start signing it, so you can read the first words beforehand! Our idea is to create something close to the karaoke machines that they have in Japan, so people all over the world will be able to enjoy singing to their favorite music!

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qe6hSDjexXw

But since we are a new group, we have yet to released almost anything. This is where we would like your help. Join us and become part of the group that makes people sing!! Anyone is welcome!

You can join us and help us in the following ways, NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED!:
Read more~~Collapse )

We provide tutorials, guides and personal support for anyone who wants to join and contribute anything!

Come and join us and post to the journal what you would like to contribute!

Spread this to everyone you know!
Thank you for reading!

6:04 pm - Hi

I'm thirteen, and started singing last year, but really got serious this past year.

I'm not in anything spectacular, really. I haven't had any chances to get into singing groups, and my parents are low on money, so we can't get a teacher (though they are aiming to get me one next year). Also, I'm homeschooled, so I don't have a chorus to sing in at my school. So that's not an option. However, my mom recently heard of a singer group which tours around the Eastern part of the US (it's where we live) and she's thinking of letting me audition to get in. It's nerve-racking just thinking about auditioning all by myself, but, if I get the chance, I think I'll do it. I really do want to sing.

As for talent, I'd say I'm alright. I personally think I have a really good range, being able to go far down, and far up. Tune? Well... I tend to find myself going flat when I'm just singing by myself, without the guitars, piano, whatever is playing with me. Also, I find I'm very reliant on the tune of the other singers. When I'm having a duet, and the other person begins to sing lower or higher, my voice automatically follows theirs, messing up the song. It's something I've been working on, and I've made some progress.

current mood: contemplative

gemanrioaks Hello.

I'm 13, and come from a pretty good choir. We won Gold with Distinction at the annual youth choral competition. I take singing really seriously and choral singing's my life. I've always wanted to join a professional choir, but where I live? It's pretty devoid of any good artistic groups. :( Ah wells, I was wondering about voice breaking. Does it happen suddenly, like one day you wake up and find that your voice's all wrong, or does it happen like gradually, like first you hear a few cracks here and there, and after a while it cracks completely?

Btw anyone heard of a french choir Les Petit Chanteurs de Saint Marc? They provided the vocals for the movie Les Choristes. Share your views on them? I find that they are an excellent choir, though their standards have dropped drastically recently, maybe because the recording batch has left the choir.

Nice to meet you all. :D

10:07 pm - "Be Prepared" - The Lion King

Hi all! I'm new here, I really enjoy singing, I do it often, but only usually in private!

Anyway here's my attempt at covering "Be Prepared" - the song made famous by Scar in The Lion King!!

It's a bit different than songs i've done before, but I love it and thought i'd give it a go and try and get into the evilness of it!

Thought there wasn't really any better people to ask opinions from!

9:12 pm - new here. =]

im new to this community. i have been singing since i was 5. i have always found music a great way to express myself. i love singing, but no one has ever really heard me sing. when im with my friends i always goof around and sing badly.. and when i try to sing for real, i get nervous and i suck.

i've had dreams of being a famous singer since i was a little kid. i know the chances are VERY slim. one in a million. not to mention the music business is screwed up completely. some actors are in a movie so they sing in a soundtrack and all of a suddent hey have a record deal and all this crazy crap and whatnot.. and then there are truly talented people who never make it. but the hope is always there for me. but im not expecting anything.

anywho.. i really love singing. anyone know any good vocal exercises/warm-ups? i would love to have somee!
thanks.. =)
